Sunrise’s program incorporates Montessori, High/Scope, and Reggio Emilia philosophies. It is designed to foster competent, responsible, adaptive citizens who are lifelong learners and problem solvers.   Our program follows the guidelines of the National Association for the Education of Young Children( NAEYC).  At Sunrise, our center’s programs are focused on the importance of developmental appropriate activities that help children build feelings of success, develop school competence and reach higher levels of learning.

We stress learning occurs in an inquiring, cooperative, and nurturing atmosphere.  Children increase their knowledge through self-and-teacher-initiated experiences.  The classroom setting will include a Math Area, Science Area, Library and Literacy Area, Creative Art Area, Dramatic/Imagination Area and Computer Area.  At Sunrise, our classroom is created to foster the atmosphere that encourages children’s social interaction for cooperative learning, peer teaching, and emotional development.

At Sunrise, children’s physical, emotional, social, aesthetic, spiritual, and cognitive needs and interests are inseparable and equally important.  Children are active learners because they are resourceful, powerful and with a lot of potential.  Daily activities are designed to encourage children’s autonomy and independence.

Learning takes place through the senses.  By using proper material, teachers can facilitate children’s divergent thinking while children explore with materials and interact with others.  These meaningful experiences are precursors to the abstract understanding of ideas.  The proper materials include skill/concept, gross motor, manipulative, construction, self-expression, and natural/everyday objects.  An open-ended array of the proper materials and activities empowers teachers to design their own developmentally responsive, culturally relevant learning environment.

Teachers and children are partners.  They create the ideas and put the ideas into actions together.  The teachers are also observers and facilitators.  Our teachers are equipped with keen observational skills in order to match student’s developmental needs with materials and activities.  Observational skills allow the teacher to guide students in creating their individual plan of learning.

Our teachers have excellent classroom leadership skills that foster a nurturing environment that is physically and psychologically supportive of learning.  Finally, at Sunrise, our teachers are equipped with the philosophy and methodology appropriate to the age level they are teaching, who have the ability and dedication to put the key concepts into practice.  Our excellent program schedule allows large blocks of uninterrupted time to problem solve, to see the interdisciplinary connections of knowledge, and to create new ideas.

The family is considered an integral part of the individual’s total development.  At Sunrise, we encourage parents to get involved with the children’s classroom activities in many ways by valuing the parents’ feedback, having parents participate in story time in the classroom, and by meeting with the parents through monthly parent meetings!!
